Steven Finkbeiner MD, PhD, is the Associate Director of the Gladstone Institute for Neurological Disease and Director of the Taube/Koret Center for Neurodegenerative Disease Research.

Steven is renown for an automated imaging system (“robotic microscope”) which was developed in his laboratory and awarded Outstanding Research Achievement by Nature Biotechnology 2011. This instrument enables tracking of living neurons over long time periods to quantify quickly the adaptive or maladaptive responses of thousands of neurons allowing determination of whether, and to what extent, a variable that is observed on one day can predict the fate of that neuron on another day. This new technique has enabled Professor Finkbeiner to unravel confounding cause-and-effect mechanisms in complex neuronal tissues.
